Originally built in 1904 as US Army Cavalry barracks, and later converted to an outpatient VA Clinic in 1946, the building was abandoned in 1989 and sat vacant for several decades, with no power, water, or HVAC.

In June 2020, work began to rehabilitate the building into the new Plank Museum & Visitor Center as part of the Historic Fort Snelling Revitalization Project. This included interior demolition and hazardous material abatement, and the rehabilitation of historic wood floors and windows. New walls went up, new stair structures were built, and existing plaster walls and ceilings were repaired.

Please join IES-MSP for our next event on Tuesday, December 12, 2023 for a lunch presentation of “Demystifying DMX. Our presenter Jeff James, Senior Product Manager for Fresco and Pathway products at Acuity Brands Lighting, will provide a presentation on the history of lighting control, the evolution of DMX as an industry standard, DMX in the commercial lighting market, and how DMX works.

DMX protocol and its predecessors have long been considered the exclusive realm of theatres and entertainment venues. This program will set the foundation for the modern use of DMX by investigating the history of stage lighting, the need and development of a Theatrical Industry Standard, and why DMX has made the migration to commercial lighting by providing an overview of potential protocol use cases, basic operation and functionality.

Learning Objectives:

  • Recall the history of Lighting Control
  • Summary of the evolution of DMX as an industry Standard
  • Discuss how DMX may be applied in commercial applications.
  • Describe how DMX Functions

Featured Speaker: Jeff James has been in the Lighting Controls industry for over 20 years. Before entering the controls arena, he was a Network Admin, setting up and running small to medium size company networks. When starting off in lighting controls he did both take offs and quotations when he wasn’t in the field performing troubleshooting and startup. He has worked the phones as tech support and moved through the ranks to manager the Controls Support group for Acuity Brands. He then decided to move over to the product side of the business and worked as Product Support Manager helping support the product groups and engineers to get product launched, specs sheets created, and documentation out to the masses. For the past 2 years he has worked as Senior Product Manager for Pathway Connectivity where he works with Pathway Dealers and Acuity sales agents to determine what is next for the Pathway portfolio.
