How Tech is Changing Lighting Design Calculations @ DAVIS and Associates
Mar 12 @ 4:30 pm – 6:30 pm

Please join IES MSP for a “How Tech is Changing Lighting Design Calculations” program on Tuesday, March 12 from 4:30-6:30 pm featuring Dan Glaser, PhD, IES at DAVIS and Associates in Eagan.

Lighting design is a complex profession, whose tools have struggled to keep up with the pace of design. Glaser will briefly review historical methods for calculations and move onto new paradigms for lighting analysis. They will also discuss how core technologies such as the web, cloud computing, BIM, daylight, and artificial intelligence are shaping a new generation of design tools. This presentation will cover how these advances are changing the practice of lighting design.

Learning Objectives:

● Attendees will be able to detail how cloud computing is changing design workflows

● Attendees will understand how they can leverage cloud storage to compare and access designs more easily

● Attendees will learn how BIM and raytracing are providing more detailed analysis with less work for lighting designers.

● Attendees will be able to see how artificial intelligence can make IES recommendations more accessible.

Featured Speaker: Dan Glaser

Dan Glaser is a lighting design tool builder with a passion for participatory design, lighting science and application, and technology. He is the Principal of LightStanza, the lighting industry’s first cloud-based lighting analysis tool. While a doctoral student in computer science and architecture at Berkeley, Glaser started his research in this area being awarded an IES Alan Lucas Memorial Scholarship. Glaser has since garnered research grants from the US Department of Energy and other sources and has published in leading Building and Computer Science journals including Building and Environment. Glaser has also taught classes at the University of Colorado, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and at leading Lighting and Sustainability industry events. For over a decade, Glaser has been an active member of different IES technical committees. In addition to his work, Glaser is a vegetarian and enjoys riding his fold-up bike between meetings and to and from airports.
